Movie review: Snowpiercer

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS.

Hello readers,
I am still up at this hour to write this review for a South Korean-American film, Snowpiercer. The film was released in August last year for South Korean cinemas and as of July 2014, it has been shown in other worldwide cinemas. In my country, I was lucky enough to spot this film in a video shop when it was supposed to show in cinema next month.

Snowpiercer is a science fiction film about a train that travels around the world (I guess) after the population on Earth have extincted. The only survivors are the ones who boarded the train and they were separated according to their class. The wealthy ones would stay at the front of the train while the poor ones would stay at the tail of the train.

Snowpiercer is a film which laid a topic about the unfortunate, horrible classes from rich to poor and the environmental issue which is the current debatable thing among mankinds. The film showed the poors rising up against the richs and what they called it: coup d'état. The poors being treated like a slaves or test subjects. Children being used to keep the engine of the train running for 18 years. People who can't remember how Earth was like since they were in the train for their whole life. It was disheartening to see such situation which fortunately did not happened for real. The film also featured propaganda about the train and Mr Wilford *say like a kindergarten child*.

Unlike The Hunger Games, Snowpiercer was worst than people running around the arena, surviving the matches against different districts. Here, in this film, the richs have a invincible gadgets and weapons to lay the poors down. Imaging yourself, being given a 'protein block' which was made using cockroaches or some kind of insects for 18 years, staying in a crowded squatters and fearing for your life, that is like being in World War II.

Putting the situation and some plot spoilers on hold, Snowpiercer was a film which left me having a poker face. I have no idea whether to judge this film positively or negatively. The storyline was indeed suspenseful at the start, however the excitement and suspense were gone by the time half the film was shown. I also have no idea what to say about the ending since I think it ended quite abruptly. Whoever wrote the film's screenplay, it is either you think it is a "good way to make the film stand out" or that is how the original story, Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Benjamin Legrand goes.

Besides the "unfortunate, twisty" ending, the whole cast was great. However, I think the characters were killed off too easily. I wished the film crew would have improve the showtime for the deceased characters, though they may not be important for the film.

In my opinion, Snowpiercer is a film that has a "win-win" situation. If you are the poor, you would feel like going against the richs for the suffering you received. For the richs, there is a need to have boundary and in order to maintain peace, you have no choice but to carry out the actions of what you have to do. It is still a survival test at the end of the day... For me, I support the poors' action and movement and who knows? Maybe you, yourself have a different perspective.

Frustration

Hello readers,
Have you ever felt frustrated over nothing? A reason which you couldn't explained or asked? This frustration has been taking over my mood and thoughts for nearly two weeks. I ca never get any valid reasons or theory about why am I frustrated. Even if I tried seeking for school councillor, I know I will not be able fo expressed myself.

My frustration started when I was having combined session in CCA on Friday. Everyone was feeling hyper over the new music scores which includes the music piece my CCA is performing for Spectrum in November this year. The awful feeling about the upcoming concert was when I thought my junior who doesn't seem come out of his community and he was super quiet. I will not go on further about the details.

All I do know that I am frustrated over something which I can't think of. Here are some reasons I have found of why some people like me are frustrated over nothing or maybe something:

"The feeling of frustration comes as a result of not being able to satisfy your needs, wants or desires through your own actions and efforts."

This statement is accurately true. I have high expectations for people or a particular things and I will be disappointed if one doesn't achieved that specific goal. If I don't get what I want or take the particular action, I will be let down easily and frustrated over a failed task.

"If you are stuck and unable to free yourself, you will become frustrated because you are unable to control your surrounding environment."

This second statement is also somewhat true. As a student councillor and also holding an important position, I always feel trapped over the tasks given and also the people I am surrounded with. I felt that the environment is always tensed, even though it is not.

Even though you can never find the reason to your frustration, the only way to clear this feeling is to just let it go and accept the fact. Accept the fact that some things in life, we can't always get what we want and begging people to work around your schedule or habits.

You can try to clear your mind by focusing on one goal at a time or listen to songs on music player or mobile applications such as Spotify, where you can choose to browse the playlists from genres like Pop, R&B, Soul or Party Hits. I recommend listening to this playlist called, Party Hits which consists of 108 songs. :)

I hope you can get your satisfaction or mood back! Always clear unknown sources before more come to attack you!

Restaurant review: Gangnam Style BBQ

Hello readers,
I just came back from a Korean restaurant called, Gangnam Style BBQ. I have to say this is so far the best Korean restaurant I have ever been to and tasted because there was this restaurant in Novena which used to have good food and service.

Okay back to Gangnam Style BBQ, you may probably expect some bias words since this was my second time visiting this restaurant. I loved how the restaurant looked since it resembled like the ones I see in South Korea and also television series. They have tables which are arranged in straight row like group gathering. Here is how the inside looks!

Gangnam Style BBQ is a business owned by actual Koreans. :) There was this lady who has many recommendations and my family and I tried out this hot pot. I can't remember what is the name of the hot pot but I can say that it wasn't really spicy enough for my family, so we added some chilies to increase the spiciness!

Although the hot pot wasn't really spicy enough, it still wasn't so bad. I recommend you to try out this hot pot if you can!

Besides the hot pot, I did tried out what people in Singapore are most familiar with, Sam Gae-Tang! Sam Gae-Tang is a literal translation of 'ginseng chicken soup'.

Since it is my favourite, I may be bias about this delicious, scrumptious soup. Gangnam Style BBQ's Sam Gae-Tang is more watery and has lesser 'oil-feel' than the ones I tried in other Korean restaurants. So do try out this soup if you love chicken and also the rice inside.

There's a potato pancake which is simple yet tasty. You should have this in your meal if you can. :) However, for those who aren't a fan of chilies, you may definitely feel the spice which will 'touched and twisted' your tongue!

Overall from my first and second visit to Gangnam Style BBQ, this is a restaurant which I am pleased with. Great service and a nice, peaceful environment where the patrons are usually Koreans themselves. A restaurant like this is a rare opportunity since there isn't any Korean BBQ restaurant around my area.

Speaking of the food above, the food which requires 'BBQ-ing' are also quite tasty, especially how marinated it is. Plus, the staff will definitely helped you out. :)

So if you are interested in having group gathering or family dinner, you should definitely give Gangnam Style BBQ a visit!

EM Module at ITE College East + An update about Devil In The Skull

Hello readers,
For this whole week, I went to ITE College East for Elective Module course. I chose to attend Digital Marketing because in my opinion, Digital Marketing has been widely used in every business and I think it benefits me in future.

ITE College East is the first Institute of Technical Education and second tertiary institution I have been to, previously went to Nanyang Polytechnic for Chinese Orchestra rehearsals for 3-4 weeks last year. The campus itself is huge and I found myself losing my way when I wanted to go to the correct location. The food court, Food Haven was delicious, especially the economical rice with vegetables and egg which costs me only $1.50 while the fishball noodles I ordered costs $3 and they were both worth it! I even went to try the campus's Subway since I am a fan of the food chain. The 6 inch breads were definitely smaller than the ones I usually ate at Bukit Panjang Plaza.

In the Digital Marketing course, we were taught on the theories about social media and also activities such as editing layout on Wix.com and adding widgets such as blog, contact form. We also have a grouping where we presented our own findings about different social media platforms such as blogging, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. For my group, we chose blogging and somehow it was a complex topic since you may refer blog as personal blog or business blog. Still, blogging is an interesting topic to researched on.

Digital Marketing is a suitable module course for people who have always been interested in social media and how to integrate one as a business strategy. As a person who has some knowledge of HTML codes and anything about simple programming, I felt that this course challenged my ability in explaining and sharing with other schoolmates, though this course did not used any HTML, CSS codings in Wix.com.

I hope to be able to participate in more tertiary institution activities and gained more exposure to other useful and magical industries such as Laser Show and 3D Printing.

Another news I wanted to share with my readers is I am probably going to transfer Devil In The Skull to another blogging platform, Tumblr. The reason why I wanted to transfer the whole blog is because recently, Blogger does not enabled me to edit my layout like how it used to years ago. Another reason is that I am always on Tumblr and since it allows me to have an additional blog, I thought why not moved Devil In The Skull to that platform for convenience.

More updates about transferring of Devil In The Skull to Tumblr will be posted on later date. However, no worries, I managed to transfer all the posts dated back to 2012 until this year to the upcoming blog on Tumblr. Therefore, you will be able to enjoy the old posts while exploring the blog's new communicating platform.

I want to thank each and every readers for viewing my blog for the past 2 years and I hope to continue on providing more enjoyable yet interesting posts or reviews on the 'coming soon' platform. Stay tuned!
